EDMOND — Jones snapped Washington’s three-year championship run with a 20–14 win in the Class 2A-I state title game Friday night at Chad Richison Stadium, sealing it on Derek Templeton’s interception of Creed Barrett’s Hail Mary attempt on the final play.
The Longhorns landed the first punch in the opening quarter when Acyn Hansen kept it himself for a 5-yard touchdown run, though Jones came up empty on the two-point try. Washington answered in the second with a physical drive capped by Josiah Dickerson’s 5-yard touchdown plunge to tie it 6–6 heading into halftime.
Jones took control in the third quarter with back-to-back power touchdowns. Jonquay Johnson barreled in from 10 yards out and the Longhorns converted the two-point play to make it 14–6, then Jose Taylor ripped off a 22-yard scoring run to stretch the lead to 20–6.
Washington wasn’t done. Javen Hall powered in from three yards out early in the fourth, and Barrett left his feet at the goal line on the two-point conversion to cut it to 20–14 and put the Warriors one stop away from a final push. Jones managed the closing minutes, and when Washington got one last shot, Templeton’s interception ended it in the end zone.
