Bulldogs take control late, capitalize on special teams miscue to hand Warriors first loss since 2021
SULPHUR — The streak is over. Sulphur snapped Washington’s 45-game win streak Friday night, finishing a 28–19 win with victory formation after a fourth-quarter surge that flipped the game.
Washington entered the night riding three straight undefeated seasons — 15–0 in 2022, 15–0 in 2023, and 14–0 in 2024 after the playoff format shifted from five rounds to four. The Warriors had not lost since the 2021 2A state championship game against Marlow.
Sulphur struck first in the opening period when Kale Brakefield, who spent three years at Washington before transferring, found Colten Cole (Rice commit) in the end zone for a red-zone touchdown. Washington answered early in the second as Josiah Dickerson broke free for a 55-yard score, sending the teams to halftime tied 7–7.
The Warriors grabbed momentum in the third quarter. Javen Hall capped a steady drive with a short touchdown run to put Washington up 13–7 after the PAT was no good.
But the fourth belonged to the Bulldogs. Jojo Gray powered across the goal line to reclaim the lead, and on the ensuing kickoff Washington fumbled, giving Sulphur a short field. Two plays later, Brakefield connected with Maddax Mobly downfield for a 41-yard touchdown, stretching the lead to 21–13.
Creed Barrett kept it himself for a Washington touchdown to pull the Warriors within two, but the two-point try failed. Mobly delivered the dagger with a late 5-yard rushing score, and Sulphur knelt out the final :25 — on 3rd down — to seal the win and end Washington’s remarkable run.
